Pacific Decadal Oscillation Modulates the Relationship Between Pacific Meridional Mode and Tropical Cyclone Genesis in the Western North Pacific
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) is known to be significantly correlated with tropical cyclone (TC) genesis over the western North (WNP), while stability of their relationship remains unknown. Here we found that nonstationary, which depends on phase Decadal Oscillation (PDO). During PDO warm phases, PMM-emanated cyclonic circulation and ascending motion can propagate entire WNP due enhanced background convection. In contrast, during cold PMM-resulted are confined eastern WNP, compensated descending prevails in WNP. Accordingly, PMM-induced consistent (inconsistent) changes large-scale conditions across act strengthen (weaken) between PMM TC (cold) phases. The result provides further guidance for improving seasonal prediction genesis.

The Pacific Meridional Mode and the Occurrence of Tropical 1 Cyclones in the Western North Pacific
30 This study investigates the association between the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) 31 and tropical cyclone (TC) activity in the western North Pacific (WNP). It is found that 32 the positive PMM phase favors the occurrence of TCs in the WNP while the negative 33 PMM phase inhibits the occurrence of TCs there. Observed relationships are 34 consistent with those from a long-term preindustrial co...
متن کاملImplications of the Observed Relationship between Tropical Cyclone Size and Intensity over the Western North Pacific
Tropical cyclone (TC) size, usually measured with the radius of gale force wind (34 kt or 17m s), is an important parameter for estimating TC risks such as wind damage, rainfall distribution, and storm surge. Previous studies have reported that there is a very weak relationship between TC size and TC intensity. A close examination presented here using satellite-based wind analyses suggests that...
متن کاملWestern North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity and ENSO
The influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific basin is examined. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), constructed from the best-track dataset for the region for the period 1950–2002, and other related variables are analyzed. ACE is positively correlated with ENSO indices. This and other statistics of the interannually varying tr...
متن کاملImpact of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity in the North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating weather systems affecting the United States and Central America (USCA). Here we show that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) strongly modulates TC activity over the North Atlantic (NA) and eastern North Pacific (eNP). During positive IPO phases, less (more) TCs were observed over NA (eNP), likely due to the presence of stronger (wea...
متن کاملThe Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Pacific Salmon Production
Retrospective analyses of Pacific Basin climate records highlight the existence of a pan-Pacific interdecadal climate oscillation. We find strong evidence for coherent patterns of interdecadal variability in Pacific winds, sea level pressures, and upper ocean temperatures. Collectively, the ocean-atmosphere pattern of variability has been labeled the “Pacific Decadal Oscillation”, or PDO. An in...
